Between 2006 and 2011, the number of jobs in health care In Nanaimo increased while those in social assistance have decreased. The largest growth occurred in ambulatory care (physicians, dentists etc) followed by nursing and residential care facilities. Employment in hospitals declined. This pattern in health care employment is consistent with the age structure of Nanaimo's population and changing delivery of care.

Relative to BC, Nanaimo has more people employed in health care in general but fewer people employed in hospitals.
